I am love to read this book - The New Miniature Schnauzer, by Dan Kiedrowski, Howell Book House (already stop print).
Spoken to a few local show breeders on the breed standard, they commented that there is no such thing as a perfect dog. They took years of breeding experience, observation studies before they can judge the standard better. Surprized? Words printed in books & websites best described what the breed standard should be.. however many (including myself) overlooked these pointers stated in black & white. I feel the need to study the breed in details, via observing them, touching them and handling them. Learning about them never ends.
What makes a good selection criteria? Well.. subjective issue when we all want something differently from our dogs. Best is to observe and compare. Do homework after visits, try to relate what you have seen, touched and compare to stated facts, ask as many questions as possible to find the closest answer. Don't trust the people when they tell you "this pup & that pup comes from a show dog parents". Ask for pedigrees at least.
